The Widgeon lll was developed to provide a light aircraft for quantity production for the private owner market. It was based on experience gained with the Widgeon ll and incorporated many of the best features of the earlier design. Widgeons were sold to South Africa, Canada and Australia and also achieved success on the sporting scene.

The type appeared with a number of different engines and proved to be very popular among the more affluent private owners.
