Bristol Aircraft Helicopter Division
In 1960, Westland acquired the helicopter division
of the Bristol Aircraft Company, which was based
at Weston-super-Mare in Somerset. The helicopter division
was led by the rotorcraft pioneer Raoul Hafner and since
its foundation in 1944 had been responsible for the Sycamore
and Belvedere helicopters.
Having acquired Bristol, Westland became responsible
for support of the Sycamore and completion of Belvedere
development and production.

Westland Helicopters
Having
absorbed all the major helicopter interests in the UK, Westland
continued to manufacture their own and the other company products
under the Westland name. This entailed re-organisation of the
firms facilities, with full airframe development manufacture taking
place at Hayes (Fairey Division) and Yeovil.

The Anglo-French Helicopter Agreement
In the mid 1960s there was a British forces requirement
for a range of new helicopters, which was met by collaboration
with the French company, Aerospatiale to produce three new
designs, Puma, Gazelle and Lynx. Westland were to take design
leadership for the Lynx, while Aerospatiale were to be responsible
for Puma and Gazelle. Both companies were to take part in
the development and manufacture of all the aircraft.
